I wrote the following poem in 2003 for Jacquie, a Red Hat Sister on the QMB, who left us way too soon. I gave "A Lady is Passing By" to all Red Hatters. Today I am renewing that gift. In the honor of Jacquie and in her memory "A Lady is Passing By" is for all Red Hatters to read, print, and to share with their chapter members. All I ask is that you remember me and Jacquie. Give me the credit for the words and Jacquie for the inspiration.
In the past years my poem has been read in memory of Red Hat Sisters all over the USA. I am grateful for each woman that took the time to let me know how much my poem meant to them and their chapters. Jacquie would be pleased ~ I know I am.
A Lady is Passing By
We are all standing along her path
As this great Lady takes her last journey,
Sisters all dressed in purple and red
As a Red Hat Sister passes by.
She will be passing my way soon,
I can feel her spirit in the morning breeze,
I am blessed that I came to know her
Before This Red Hat Sister passed by me.
The words of an old hymn comfort me,
"Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home."
In grace a Red Hat Sister is passing by.
As she passes we tip our red hats in respect
And our hearts crying shed tears of love.
We stand in awe - she is one of our own.
Our Red Hat Sister is passing by.
