    Llittle Sophie and her antics!!

    I AM CONSTANTLY AMAZED...

(CALLIE ~ SWEET CALLIE ~ THE ALPHA KITTY)

At the learning process of animals and am no less amazed today with all that Sophie has taken upon herself to learn to do...Now, this can work two ways...

For her benefit ~ and to her dismay!! She has learned to open and close doors..but once the door gets closed...she has not learned to open it (them)...which means, if ever I go away ~ she is liable to get locked behind a closed door where she will remain until I return.

What this also means is that I will not be able to trust her inside my home ~ while I go away for a couple days or an entire weekend trip!! She will have to be placed in a Kennel for animals while I take that trip!!

And, since I cannot explain to her why that would happen ~ and, unless I can be trained differently ~ this is at a standstill.

In one bedroom ~ which I now have wired shut from handle to handle (closet opens from center with slider doors to left and right...and I have a Gallon of New Paint in a Can placed in the front of the closet thinking she cannot move it..

OH!!! CONTRAIRE!!! She has outsmarted me, once again!

I can hear her moving it and by the time I get to the closet, she is already inside. I have prevented her from closing a particular bedroom door by placing a thick rug in front of the door so she cannot move it ~ but have yet to figure out the closet door.

Same thing happens with the Laundry Room doors...I got up this AM to find out both doors were opened and my washer and dryer were looking at me like two gaping teeth in a wide-open mouth!!

Now, since this is winter ~ I am sure my heat found an escape route somewhere!! Why she insists on doing this, I have no idea! Probably ~ boredom ~ and just because she "can". I am certain she is now attempting to learn how to turn the light switch on and off in the Guest Bath!! I can hear her in there fooling around with it.

Everytime the phone rings ~ my landline ~ she runs and jumps on the table next to it. I feel certain if she could figure it out, she would take the phone off the hook.

Now, you may think I am overestimating her ~ that, too, is not an unrealistic statement ~ because I never thought she would be able to open closet doors, either....

This is a furry animal that plays with Green PipeCleaners (see my recent Video, Gallery, main page)...and you will see her with both her Webkinz pet and her Green Pipecleaners)...and carries them around in her mouth and is amused for hours. Of course, I have to use those special long stemmed brushes one uses to get under the washer and dryer ~ and the stove ~ to retrieve them .... and she drives me insane with all that.

And, forget leaving even one stocking out...as she will find it, carry it around in her mouth like a lionness with her kill...and then if I do not reach her quick enough...she runs and places them in her water dish. Now, if I have not done this quick enough ~ I find them in the water dish ~ half in ~ half out ~and the water has "siphoned" out of the dish all over the floor.

[sigh}...you think I need charcoal in my shoes or what?

She is an interesting cat ~ and every morning ~ without fail ~ she rattles the venetian blinds in my main bedroom ~ where I am still doing some sound sleeping ~ and she reaches up, uses her front paws ~ and scrapes all down the blinds to awaken me...as I have to be aroused to encourage her to "quit it"........

I think the Venetian Blinds have to go.

    For another time............

My cat "New Guy" has been opening doors for years. He knows how to open pocket doors, French doors, laundry room doors, closet doors, etc. I have also devised ways to keep them closed. One method that works for the doors that open in the middle is to put a thick elastic band from the base of one handle to the base of the other (or one knob to the other). For the pocket doors I took two "eyes" from hook and eye sets and screwed one into the door and one into the door frame exactly lined up above the other. Then I put a metal peg (used on a peg board) into both holes from the top when the door is closed. This keeps the door closed, and is easy to pull out when you need to open the door, and could be done from either side (a hook and eye was too long and didn't line up properly unless the door was open quite a bit). I hope that helps! P.S. - New Guy knows how to push and pull doors open from both sides, and used to let all the cats out of the cat room when I was gone.
